About Us

Nicola is present in several channels: Mass Market (Major Distribution), Food Service (restaurants, hotels and offices) and Export.

The origins of Nicola coffees date back to 1779, in one of the most emblematic establishments in Lisbon: Café Restaurante Nicola. This establishment was a meeting place for writers and politicians and the most famous gatherings in Lisbon.

Among these personalities, the poet Bocage stands out. From the beginning, Café Restaurante Nicola had its own batch of coffee, coming from Brazil and São Tomé and Príncipe and sold under the name Nicola. The conquest of the market, the emergence of new habits, the demands in relation to coffee and new coffee blends, made it necessary to have control over all stages of production and thus the factory in Venda Nova was created in 1950.

MZBI Group

MZBI is the acronym for Massimo Zanetti Beverage Ibéria S.A. the company created by the Italian Group of the same name, in 2017, for the production and marketing of coffees in the Iberian Peninsula. In Portugal, the group entered through the merger between Segafredo Zanetti Portugal and Nutricafés S.A. which at the time of the merger owned the Nicola and Chave D’Ouro brands and, more recently, with the acquisition in 2019 of Nandi coffees. With this merger of brands, all of which already have consolidated leadership positions, technological and production capabilities have doubled, from roasting, grinding and packaging to distribution. MZBI is today one of the three largest operators in the Portuguese beverage market providing the Food Service, Mass Market and Office distribution channels.
